News bites: Alanis Morrisette, Candlebox, Liz Phair, Extreme

Again, thanks to Tied to the '90s reader Chris for the tips.

* Alanis Morissette, fresh off a long tour opening for Matchbox 20, has a new single, "Underneath." Her album Flavors of Entanglement comes out on June 10, and if you go here, you can get it with five bonus tracks, six lyric art cards, and a big fat Alanis Morrisette autograph. Anyone else think of Alanis everytime How I Met Your Mother does the Robin Sparkles gag about the ex-Canadian teen pop star?

Alanis will also be on the Today Show Friday (May 23), then plays European festivals all summer.

*Candlebox, who reunited for some shows a couple of years ago, have a new album out July 22 called Into the Sun. The first single, "Stand," is now available on iTunes and is not a cover of the 1989 REM hit (if anything, the guitar riff sounds like "You," their second hit). It's their first album of new material since 1998's Happy Pills (a greatest hits came out in 2006).

Here's their last big rock hit, 1998's "It's Alright." I honestly do not remember this song at all, and I was living in Oklahoma City 10 years ago, where there was only an active rock station, and Candlebox came on tour (I specifically remember this because Feeder opened, and we contemplated going. I now realize that Feeder rule, and I should have gone).

* Liz Phair has left Capitol Records after two adult-pop albums, and signed with Dave Matthews' label, ATO. The first release will be a 15th-anniversary edition of her debut, Exile in Guyville, out June 24. She will reportedly perform the album in its entirety at a show in New York the next night. A new studio album will follow in the fall.

I never really liked Exile to Guyville, but the follow-up, Whip-Smart, was pretty good, and I really liked the single "Supernova."

* And finally, Idolator reports that Extreme are back together, with a new album to be released this year. And yes, Extreme had their biggest hit in 1991. The band's last album was 1995, after which lead singer Gary Cherone famously joined Van Halen for an album and lead guitarist Nuno Bettencourt not-so-famously joined Perry Farrell for an album.

Candlebox's "Stand" sounds like "Cover Me"?????????? Dude, can I have what you've been smoking?

Anonymous said...

Agreed. Stand sounds nothing like Cover Me. Can't wait for Into the Sun to come out though.

Tip: Seen both Feeder and Candlebox live many times and they're both good live acts but honestly, there is no contest. Candlebox blows them off the stage in a live setting.

nor was "cover me" their second hit. it was the 4th single from the first record, and came out after "Far behind," in the fall of '94.

What happened to thinking that Candlebox blows? Is that not in favor any more? Because they blow.

They do still blow everyone away, Dawson's Dad. That's still in favor. It was even mentioned a couple posts above your's.

Dawson's Dad -
Is that a personal vindetta you have against Candlebox? I mean, you took the time to come over to an article about Candlebox and actually took the time to post about them. If they really did "blow," what exactly brings you to this forum? Personally, if I don't care for a band's music, I just leave them be.

As for this review, how exacty can you say "Stand" sounds like "Cover Me"? The 2 couldn't really sound any more different. "Stand" does go back to the "You" roots, but does a great job of still staying original and, most importantly, absolutely ROCKS! I'm glad to see Candlebox back as they were and are one of the most underrated ROCK (not grunge as some people like to claim....mainly those in the media) acts out there. 15 years later, their debut CD is still a regular play. And "Happy Pills" should be one of the most underrated albums in the history of rock.....it's that good. "Lucy," while definitely not the same as the self-titled, is extremely underrated as well. And if "Stand" is any indication of what "Into the Sun" will be like, they should be enjoying multi-platinum success once again. It's a shame that there are reviewers like yourself out there who write Candlebox off without actually listening to their music. Had you done so, you'd realize that "Stand" compares to "You," and comes nowhere close to sounding like "Cover Me." I'm all for people expressing their opinion, but please do your homework first and justify your claims! And I also know that the band itself doesn't need someone like me coming to their defense. I've seen them live and can tell that (besides that their live act is one of the best out there) they are just out to do what they love - make great music and to put on the best show for their FANS, not some biased, uneducated reviewer like yourself.

And... I'm a moron. I meant to say "You," not "Cover Me." It's been fixed above. Thanks for reading!

Dear Candlebitches,
This ain't no Candlebox forum. The article barely even mentioned Candlebox. Why? Because they blow in two distinct ways. Always have and always will.

the 13 years since Extreme's Waiting For The Punchline was released in 1995 is not as simple as you pointed out. First, Nuno Bettencourt left the band in 1996 to at first pursue a solo career. Later on his 1st solo album was released titled, Schizophonic, it was released in 1997 by A&M Record. It was a commercial failure, but was a hit with music critics. Great album. Meanwhile, Gary Cherone and Pat Badger were thinking of keeping Extreme going on and replacing Nuno on lead guitar. They decided you can't replace him, and they were right. So Pat and Gary went seperate ways. Gary later joined Van Halen, Pat was briefly in a band called Supertransatlantic and released an album, than he went on to open an Alpaca farm. Gary Cherone would find himself in a mess with Van Halen, they released 1 album titled 3. A gold album and great tour, Cherone would record a 2nd album, but it turned out VH decided to part ways. So Cherone formed a band with Extreme bassist, Pat Badger and drummer Mike Mangini, called Tribe Of Judah. They went on to released an album in 2002 titled Exit Elvis. Nuno on the other hand, kept really busy. After Schizophonic came out in 1997, he continued to do lead vocals and guitar, he later formed a band called Mourning Widows and they released albums in Japan in 1998 and 2000, called Mourning Widows and Furnished Souls For Rent. They broke up and in 2002 he formed a band called Population 1. An album came out in 2002. Population 1 later merged into another band featuring the new drummer with Extreme Kevin, the band was called Dramagods. They released an album in 2005 in Japan called Love. In 2005 Cherone released an EP and in 2007 Nuno Bettencourt went back to his guitar, songwriting roots again teaming with Perry Farrel and joining Sattelite Party, bringing his drummer Kevin along. They released 1 album in 2007 titled Ultra-Payloaded. Nuno and Kevin left SP in 2007 to reform Extreme. Extreme had done reunion shows all the time. So it was just a matter of time, despite all these other things going on with the, that the band would reform.

Paul Geary Extreme's 1st drummer is a manager, he manages Godsmack.

Don't forget that super-embarrassing VH1 special Bands Reunited, where Nuno refused to work with the rest of the band.

And... wait. An ALPACA farm? That's not rock and roll!

Even in the most sexually liberated and self-satisfied of nations, many people still yearn to burn more, to feel ready for bedding no matter what the clock says and to desire their partner of 23 years as much as they did when their love was brand new.
The market is saturated with books on how to revive a flagging libido or spice up monotonous sex, and sex therapists say “lack of desire” is one of the most common complaints they hear from patients, particularly women.
